200HR Yoga Alliance Approved Program:

This 3-week Intensive, Yoga Alliance approved, 200-Hour Yoga Teacher Training is a foundational training rooted in the lineages of Hatha and Ashtanga yoga. This Yoga Alliance certified training will provide participants with the knowledge, practice, and experience to become creative, competent, and inspiring teachers. 

Training will be held at the Peace Retreat in Playa Negra Costa Rica. The Tuition Costs listed below include lodging, two fresh meals per day, and full tuition. 

The training is open to all, both those inspiring to become the next generation of dynamic teachers as well as to those simply wishing to immerse themselves in the practice of yoga. Those with injuries and health issues are welcome and encouraged to attend. 

PROGRAM GOALS

ASANA

Students will be able to perform or guide a student into various asana (postures). Additionally, for each posture participants will know the safety precautions, modifications, contraindications, the proper alignment of the pose, and will feel confident offering hands-on-adjustments.

PRANAYAMA AND BANDHAS

Pranayama: Effectively guide and practice various traditional pranayama exercise and effectively link movement with breath.

Bandhas: Understand the bandhas and how to apply them in their own practice as well as their student's.

MEDITATION

Students should feel comfortable guiding a basic meditation practice and cultivating awareness and movement as meditation through a guided asana practice.

PHILOSOPHY

Students will be familiar with the 8 limbs of yoga and the ethical principles of yoga (the yamas and the niyamas). They will have a basic understanding of the history of modern yoga. They will be familiar with the classic yogic texts. Additionally, students will learn how to live a yogic lifestyle, taking their yoga off of their mats and into their day-to-day lives. 

ANATOMY AND PHYSIOLOGY

Students will be able to correctly identify the primary bones and muscles of the body. They will understand movement principles and how to prevent injury. Students will also have a basic understanding of the yoga energetic body (the chakras, nadis, and koshas).

TEACHING METHODOLOGY

Graduating teachers will feel comfortable leading a group, all-levels class. Students will be comfortable with sequencing, cueing, and leading. They will be able to guide students safely through a 60-minute alignment-based vinyasa class. 

GROWTH

Students will grow their personal practice, develop their voice, and deepen their connection. They will learn to lead and to support their fellow teachers and community members.

Transportation to and from the venue, lodging, and two, fresh, healthy, local meals are included in your tuition package, off-site teacher training rates available by inquiry. 

The Peace Retreat is a unique retreat center offering jungle views, wildlife, beach access, and an on-site swimming pool. The yoga room where you will spend your days is open air with stunning views of Costa Rica. 

Around the retreat center you'll find private study nooks over looking the jungle to complete your homework in serenity. 

The venue is unlike many retreat centers in that it is is not isolated from the broader community. Participants will be free to explore Costa Rican culture and life in their spare time.

SCHEDULE + ITINERARY

This is an intensive. In order to fulfill the requirements of Yoga Alliance we will meet from 6am-6pm daily with a lunch and appropriate breaks. There are some free afternoons in the schedule for surfing and other excursions.

ABOUT THE TRAINERS

Selena Garefino EYRT, MPH, PhD Candidate

Selena began practicing yoga when she was 13 years old. She has studied with Noah Mazé, Elena Brower, Sarah Powers, and Nicolai Bachman. Selena is dedicated to teaching movement through artful alignment to support her students on and off of their mats. Selena holds Masters of Public Health from Boston University in International Health.

 

Anwar Gilbert

Anwar is a yoga teacher, nutritionalist, personal trainer, integrated flexibility specialist, pre/postnatal specialist, and corrective exercise specialist. Anwar has been guiding his clients on their individual paths to wellness for 14 years. He has been teaching anatomy and physiology and mentoring personal trainers throughout his career.
