Behind the Scenes of 2017 with Yoga Travel Tree

WHAT'S NEW WITH YOGA TRAVEL TREE

With 2017 already one quarter over (what?!), I'm excited for what the next 9 months will bring. Here's a little summary of the goings on around here:

BRAND NEW WEBSITE

I spent most of the last three months completely rebuilding YogaTravelTree.com from the ground up.

After dealing with not one, not two, not THREE, but FOUR site crashes while I was traveling in India, Tanzania, and Bali last year, I knew that something had to give.

So I hunkered down, turned off all notifications and distractions and got to work. Let me know what you think!

SNAZZY NEW LOGO

A brand new website AND a new logo is completely coincidental. I didn’t set out to basically rebuild my company brand face from the ground up...but here we are. ;)

After 3.5 years of adorable little “fire cracker hands stick figure yogi” logo, I was ready for something a little more modern, a little more sleek, and a lot more attractive.

The irony is that I designed this one myself while enjoying a glass of wine in about 2 hours. The first logo took about 2 months to settle on after paying for multiple options from a designer, asking a committee of friends and mentors their opinions, and asking myself “how will this logo make people feel?”

One important lesson entrepreneurship has taught me over the years is that your fonts, colors, and logo are secondary to the voice you use to communicate your message, how you treat and connect with your ideal clients and customers, and the general mojo you put out into the world.

All of that is your real brand - the way people will talk about your company when you’re not in the room - not the colors, fonts, and graphics.

I feel really great about the core Yoga Travel Tree brand, so it was time for a little year 4 spring cleaning and pampering. And boy does she look good.

RETIRING OUR SIGNATURE YOGA ADVENTURES (FOR NOW)

In 18 months, I built 14 retreats and teacher trainings and delivered 9 of them myself.

It was an amazing 18 months traveling the world, learning so much about the retreat business, building meaningful + transformational travel adventures, meeting inspiring travel and yoga lovers from around the globe, and even getting to travel with my mom for the first time...ever.

But it was also exhausting. So I've decided to take a break from retreats in 2017, but I have a feeling they'll be back. ;)

Sign up below to be the first to know when they return.

Here are a few highlights from our 2017 adventures to Thailand... Bali... Tanzania/Kilimanjaro... and back to Bali.

LAUNCHING RETREAT TRAINING PROGRAM

The past 18 months of successful (and some not so successful) retreat planning, promotion, and delivery PLUS my 12 years of experience in the educational travel industry have taught me a lot about about what makes a SUCCESSFUL retreat.

And after leading 9+ retreats in just 1.5 years, I’m asked all the time “how did you do it?” especially by people who’ve been struggling to get even one retreat off the ground.

So I'm excited to get back to my roots and help more yoga teachers and other business owners create, launch, and profit from their own retreats through my step-by-step course: Retreat Rockstar.

Retreats have been game-changing for my business and I know it can be for yours as well. If you want to learn more about this, click here and you'll be the first to know. :)

CO-FOUNDING THE HEARTLAND YOGA FEST IN KANSAS CITY!

I’m extremely excited to be working with two fellow yoga badasses (Angela Cronk of Hagoyah Studio and Lauren Leduc of Karma Tribe Yoga) to bring an incredible yoga festival to the heart of the US!

The event is happening in Kansas City June 2018 and our deeply discounted Founders tickets will go on sale soon.

So if you’re a midwest yogi or interested in traveling to the heartland for an amazing event, head over to Heartland Yoga Festival and get on the early-bird Lovers List!

SIMPLIFIED PROMOTION OPTIONS ON YOGA TRAVEL TREE

Over the years, I’ve played around with all kinds of marketing packages and options for yoga teachers and training organizers. And finally, I think we’ve found our sweet spot.

Our mission is to connect travel-loving yogis with the best fit yoga travel experiences out there.

In order to do that, we have to earn revenue (this is a business after all). Crazy, I know! ;) Therefore, we now offer ONE simple way to market your retreats, trainings, venues, and events on our site: The Better Package.

ANNOUNCEMENT: Share Your Yoga Retreats & Teacher Trainings with the World!

The Yoga Travel Tree Directory is BACK!

We’re officially opening up the Yoga Travel Tree directory allowing you to share your amazing yoga retreats, yoga teacher trainings, and yoga venues with our travel-loving community!

We know first-hand how hard it is to get the word out about your yoga trips. And we also know how crazy expensive it can be to advertise on yoga portals and directories, buy Facebook and Google advertising, and get PR mentions.

This is why we’ve created three affordable listing packages for any yoga business at any stage of development to help promote your yoga experiences.

Seriously. Your local coffee shop likely gets more of your cash each month than the price of our listing packages. ;)

Here’s what we offer:

  • 1 Yoga Listing - $3/month (yep…3 bucks)
  • 3 Yoga Listing - $6/month
  • 6 Yoga Listings - $9/month

See I told you this was crazy affordable. We got you covered! However, these rates won’t last forever! Lock in these rates forever!

But you might be wondering why we’re re-launching our directory if we offer a few retreats of our own.

Why re-launch our directory?

We love our yoga adventures. They are near and dear to our hearts created with an adventurous spirit. But we also know that our adventure-focused style of travel, our departure dates, and our chosen destinations aren’t for everyone. And that’s okay.

We started Yoga Travel Tree a little over two years ago with one singular mission:

Connect travel-loving yogis with meaningful yoga experiences around the world.

So that’s what we want to do. Thousands of yogis visit our site every day, but many of them are looking for the retreats and trainings that we just don’t or can’t offer.

[bctt tweet="Mission: Connect yogis with meaningful #yoga experiences around the world. Learn how:"]

We get emails every single day from yogis looking for a specific type of retreat or teacher training experience. Here’s what they ask:

  • Do you have any retreats in April? I have time off from work then.
  • I’ve always wanted to go on a retreat to Greece. Do you offer that?
  • I have unexpected vacation time coming up next week. Can you help me find a retreat to Hawaii for these dates?!
  • Do you know of any 300 hour yoga teacher trainings in Italy?
  • I’m looking to host my own retreat. Do you know any great venues in Bali that work with small yoga groups?

By opening up our site to you and sharing your awesome yoga experiences, we can serve our community even more and ultimately help more people travel the world and enjoy yoga. Win, win, win!

Our new yoga directory is pretty damn sexy (if you ask me! - I’m only a little biased ;)! Here are just a few of the awesome features...

Awesome Features

  • Vibrant, responsive design: Your listings become more engaging and eye-catching on any device.
  • Simple Search Function: Search by type of yoga experience, destination, and/or time of year. Let our search engine do the rest.
  • Direct Contact with Inquiring Yogis: Our community can contact you directly via email or by the contact form on each listing. We don’t hold them like some sites.
  • Affordable Monthly Pricing: Cancel any time and share all your yoga retreats and trainings.
  • Exclusive Business of Yoga Training: We’ve worked with hundreds of yogis and dozens of yoga businesses over the past 2 years (not to mention my decade of experience before starting Yoga Travel Tree). We’ve learned a lot and we want to help you have the most kick ass yoga business of your dreams.

Get Started!

2016 is going to be the year of travel for me and I hope it is for you too! Let’s work together to connect you with the yogis out there looking for exactly what you offer.

What a Yoga Travel Tree Teacher Training Has that Others are Missing

If there’s one important lesson we’ve all learned from our own yoga teacher training journey, it’s that there’s so much more to becoming a yoga teacher than knowing how to teach yoga. Yoga isn’t just a mashup of poses and postures and creating playlists.

[bctt tweet="Yoga is a philosophy. A lifestyle. A way of seeing the world."]

We want you to have more than just a teaching certificate. We want you to have all the information, knowledge, insights, and abilities you need to go out into the world and find success - financially, physically, and spiritually.

That’s why we include several bonuses in our trainings that we feel are important to giving you the best possible yoga teacher training experience possible, and go above and beyond the Yoga Alliance requirements.

Introduction to Ayurveda

Our lead instructor, Kate, has spent the last several years running her own Ayurveda coaching and consulting company. She brings that experience (and her Ayurveda Practitioner Certification) to our 200 HR teacher training to give you a detailed introduction to Ayurveda. Whether you’ve never heard of this sister science to yoga or if you’re looking to broaden your knowledge, you’ll walk away with a deeper understanding of Ayurveda that you can share with future students.

Advanced Business Training

All Yoga Alliance registered schools are required to talk about the business side of becoming a yoga teacher, but we take that to a whole new level! Our mission is to not only help you deepen your own practice and knowledge of yoga, we also want your training to be PRACTICAL. After this experience, you'll walk away with strategies and approaches to securing your first teaching positions, know how to professionalize your approach to this new career, and much more. Because there are only so many hours in a day, we also give all of our teacher training graduates discounted access to Brooke’s 6-week Soulful Business Bootcamp advanced online training course. We believe in providing and delivering value and helping you achieve the professional success you want!

Advanced Mediation Training

Meditation is the cornerstone of any well-rounded yoga practice, and unlike other trainings, we don’t just say “hey you should probably meditate.” We include daily group guided meditation to show you the many different styles, structures, and approaches to meditation, so you’re prepared to bring the practice back to your future students. Of course, this daily practice during the training will help you broaden and deepen your own meditation journey along the way.

Yoga Travel Tree Retreat Discounts

We wouldn’t be a very good yoga travel company if we didn’t encourage and help our teacher training graduates see the world with us! That’s why we provide travel grants and discounts for our training alumni to use toward a retreat of their choice. There’s only one thing we love more than giving the gift of travel - it’s giving the gift of travel+yoga!

[bctt tweet="We provide travel grants and discounts for our training alumni"]

Teach on A Yoga Retreat

Once you’ve fulfilled your training requirements and gotten some teaching experience under your belt, we would love to have you teach on one of our global yoga adventures held throughout the year! First things first... let’s get you trained and certified through Yoga Travel Tree!

What EXACTLY is included when you train with Yoga Travel Tree?

So we’ve shared a lot of information with you about our yoga teacher training programs, and now we want to give you a quick and dirty breakdown of what exactly you receive when you embark on this journey with us.

5 Unique Things to Include on Your Costa Rica Trip

A Yoga Travel Tree yoga retreat is different. We call them yoga ‘adventures’ for good reasons. Rather than being stationed at a retreat center for days, we’ll take you out into the world, to see the sights and experience the culture of the place you chose to visit. More often than not, our adventures will travel from place to place and city to city, so you can see as much as possible during your trip. During all of our travels we offer daily yoga classes taught by wonderful, well-educated instructors so you can still find your balance, no matter where you are in the world. Think a Costa Rica yoga retreat sounds boring? Stereotypical? Cliche? Think again! This area of the world is one of the most culturally rich, and beautiful places you can visit. With that said, there are 5 things you should make sure your Costa Rica yoga retreat includes...

1. Help Out the Community

Image: Clark Weber

While in Costa Rica, we’ll help to maintain one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. Frequently, due to high levels of ocean pollution in the region, the coast of Santa Teresa becomes littered with garbage. On every Yoga Travel Tree Adventure we plan a Seva or “selfless service” project to give back to our host communities. While in Costa Rica, we’ll spend a day returning the beaches of Santa Teresa to their natural beauty, and weather permitting, do some yoga in the newly pristine sand.

2. City and the Sea

Image: David Ingram

We value the cultural experience of a destination way too much to set up camp at some remote and isolated yoga retreat center. In Costa Rica, we’ll begin our journey around the country in San Jose, the nation's capital. You’ll have a day to explore the city, see the sights, and meet some locals before we head to our first costal town, Jaco, where you’ll soak up the sun and enjoy the fresh sea air.

3. Hiking, Surfing and SUP

Image: Strike a Pose Photography

While in Jaco, you’ll get to learn how to surf or stand up paddleboard (SUP) with a trained instructor. We’ll maybe do some SUP yoga, play in the waves and catch some rays! The following day we’ll make the trip to Montezuma, and the physical highlight of the trip: a jungle hike to a swimming hole, complete with crystal clear water, waterfalls, and cliff jumping!

4. Yoga!

Image: @Rima_Danielle

Of course, this is still a YOGA retreat! While you will do at least one yoga class each day, we don’t want to overload your bodies! We do a lot of exciting and sometimes rigorous activities, so our yoga schedule may be a little different than what you’ve seen on other retreats. When you’ve exerted yourself, we might end the day with a restorative class to calm your nerves and help you get a good rest. Our aim is to supplement the daily experiences with complimentary yoga classes, not wear you out!

5. Make Lifelong Friends

Image: Strike a Pose Photography

We keep our Yoga Retreats small. With a maximum of 15 yogis, you’re sure to get all of the instruction you need during yoga classes, and all of the attention you should get during the rest of the trip. This small group size allows you to form strong, lasting bonds with your fellow travelers so you depart for home with lifelong friends.

4 Yoga Sutras That Reflect the Mission of Yoga Travel Tree

The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali contain 196 Indian Sutras.  These Sutras, or aphorisms were compiled around 400 CE by Patanjali, who brought materials together about yoga from older traditions.  Within this text, we read about the 8 Limbs of Yoga:  Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi.

When you decide to take part on your first yoga retreat through Yoga Travel Tree, you might first think of the incredible places you’ll travel, or the amazing people you may meet.  Maybe it’s the new and exciting cuisine that sealed the deal, or the culture of a region you’ve never before seen.  Of course, all of these are reasons enough to venture out on a retreat that will certainly deepen your practice.  Looking closer, you may notice there's a carefully crafted method to what might seem like madness.

Our Mission

“Yoga Travel Tree was inspired by the simple idea of creating rich, meaningful yoga adventures around the world. We know from experience that both travel and yoga can be transformative experiences for the mind, body, and soul. At Yoga Travel Tree, we bring the two together to offer travel adventures for the young and the young at heart, for the advanced yogi and those just getting started, for the world traveler and the novice sojourner. All are welcome on our yoga adventures.”

Referring to the Yoga Sutras, we encourage you to take note of how this text reflects our mission.  For example, traveling to some parts of the world that survive on much less than what we are accustomed to in the U.S. reflects upon Niyama, or more specifically Santosha:  The mere satisfaction with what one has.  Of course, you’ll be experiencing Asana within the numerous yoga class offerings you’ll be part of.  Pranayama is experienced through breathing, meditation, and reflecting towards the inner self.  Dhyana and Samadhi are integrated as well throughout the meditative practices you’ll take part of while on your journey.

4 Sutras that Reflect the Mission of Yoga Travel Tree

1.  Atha Yoga Anushasam

"Now the discipline of yoga is being presented"

The keyword in the above Sutra is the simple word "now".  What is happening to you at this very moment?  What sounds do you hear?  What sights do you see?  What do you smell, how do you feel?  An adventure with Yoga Travel Tree isn't simply a vacation to someplace exciting.  These journeys require you to live in the present, experience and enjoy this very moment.  Through class offerings by experienced yoga teachers, we hope to bring you to your senses and become more in touch with what is happening to you at each and every moment.  Savor it, experience it, learn from it and enjoy each and every moment you live while on a journey with Yoga Travel Tree.

2.  Tada Drastuh Svarupe Vasthanam

"Then the seer abides in its own nature"

To better explain this verse, one can look to the example of the creation of a statue.  In order to make a statue, one does not simply add to stone, mold and build layer upon layer.  For a statue to truly emerge, one depicts an image or being and carves away all that is not the statue.  Finally, the only thing remaining is the inner true form, a magnificent statue, while everything that does not serve to be the statue is carved away.  Embarking upon a journey with Yoga Travel Tree is meant to be a transformative experience for the mind, body and soul.  Think of yourself as the statue.  When you are removed from your every day life, living in another part of the world, you are given time to let go of everything that doesn't serve your true self.  Upon returning, your new being resembles that of a statue, your true inner beauty shines on for all others to acknowledge.

3.  Samtosad Anuttamah Sukhalabhah

"From contentment unsurpassed happiness is obtained"

Contentment.  The willingness to accept everything that has happened in your life:  the failures, the successes, the winning and losing, and appreciating yourself as you are in this very moment.  This sutra refers to the ability to remain present and happy with everything that has happened in your life up to your current state.  Happiness is attainable for everyone, in order to find happiness, one must find contentment.  Whether you're waking up near the beaches of Costa Rica, or taking in the inspiring mountains of Bali, all of these experiences are designed to allow you to see your life as it truly is, and become content with where you are, as the product of your past.

4.  Tapas Svadhyaya Isvara Pranidanah Kriya Yogah

"Self-discipline, self-study and devotion are yoga in the form of action"

Tapas is derived from the Sanskrit word "tap", which means "to burn", or otherwise meaning strong discipline.  This Sutra is all about utilizing self-discipline to create a strong, consistent and life changing yoga practice.  Practicing postures, breathing, and using the meditation of yoga consistently, regardless of your circumstances is what this Sutra truly embodies.  It is our hope that with a Yoga Travel Tree retreat or teacher training, you are able to not only practice yoga and meditation consistently, but that you continue to view this practice as a life-long journey.  You will learn to make time in your day to day routine to practice asana, meditate, and take your yoga practice to the next level.

To travel to a part of the world you’ve never before seen is a step in the right direction for exploration, and taking yourself outside of the box.  With this, and the help of Yoga Travel Tree, you’ll be experiencing much more than you have imagined.  A yoga retreat isn’t simply a trip to a far off land, taking a bunch of yoga classes, then packing your bags and heading home.  It’s truly a transformative experience that will shed new light on what you truly value in your own life.  One may choose to experience as little or as many of the 8 limbs of yoga as they see fit.  Hopefully, you’ll feel inspired to follow through and open yourself up to what your mind, body and soul experiences, and have a little fun along the way. This is the true goal of Yoga Travel Tree.

Introducing Rachel, Yoga Travel Tree's Partnership Wizard!

Name:

Rachel Rannow

Social Media Account of Choice:

Facebook

Your Home base:

Cairns, Australia

Where does your yoga story begin?

In the tiny mining town in Northern Minnesota where I grew up, I was introduced to the world of yoga in my very own living room. The 1989 Sport's Illustrated Super Shape-Up program included Elle Macpherson's Stretch and Strengthen cassette tape, and it was my favorite in the three-part series!

What got you hooked?

I dabbled off and on for years, until really coming into my practice through Hot Yoga. It was through doing the same series over and over and over again that I realized yoga is a journey that will never end. I can come to my mat again and again and every time it will be different. There will always be something to learn, always some way to grow. Once I came to understand yoga is effort and intention rather than chasing some ideal or perfection, I knew I had found my home.

Tell us one weird/interesting fact about yourself:

I find picking a "favorites" a nearly impossible task. Color? Food? Movie? Song? I can talk myself into and out of my choices so quickly that really, it's just better not to go there. The inevitable conclusion of "but I like so many of them so much!" tends to make it a frustrating venture for all involved.

What do you love the most about traveling?

For me, traveling is very much about uncovering a place unknown. As I learn about a new place, an environment, and it's people, it sometimes (a lot of the time, actually) leads me to an internal discovery - through travel, I'm able to excavate aspects of myself I didn't know I had. Through new places and experiences, travel has always been an opportunity for me to learn and grow.

Where would you most love to travel and why?

Through time and space. I could have all the answers to burning historical questions and future projections - who shot JFK? How where the pyramids built? What does the future of our planet and species look like? And will Twinkies outlast everything else?

If you were stuck on an island with only one thing, what would it be?

The most badass multi-tool available. With a multi-tool, I could plan a daring escape by building a boat if the island isn't awesome or set up shop if it is. I'm convinced that with the right combination of knives, saws, scissors, tweezers, picks, files, pliers and bottle openers that multi-tools offer, I'd be covered either way I want to go!

What’s your number one piece of advice for someone just getting into yoga?

Keep going! Even if it feels like you're not getting it, keep going. Even if you feel like you have no idea what you're doing, keep going. Even if you don't want to keep going, keep going. Remember that there is no right or wrong, your yoga journey is unique to you. Yoga takes on as many forms as people: online communities and videos, gym or studio classes and courses, even employers and community centers are starting to offer yoga. With an endless combination of styles and teachers out there, you'll find something that resonates with you. There is a place for you in the yoga world - keep going until you find it.

Where does your yoga story begin?

When I was 18 (about six years ago) and suffering from body image issues and anxiety, I started practicing yoga and it helped me exponentially. I haven't looked back since!

What got you hooked?

The mind-body awareness and the way you feel afterwards... Savasana - need I say more! I also love that there are so many different yoga styles to practice and they all give you an amazing feeling.

Tell us one weird/interesting fact about yourself:

I used to work as a horse-trainer on the opposite side of the country.

What do you love the most about traveling?

The sense of freedom and adventure. I love learning about different cultures and I love how it helps you learn about yourself in the process.

Where would you most love to travel and why?

Norway - it's where my great-grandmother immigrated from.

If you were stuck on an island with only one thing, what would it be?

Music!

What’s your number one piece of advice for someone just getting into yoga?

Don't worry about what others are doing; make each practice your own and relish in how your body feels and always be aware of what your body is telling you (when it says "um, not today," respect that!).
