I have been traveling all over the world on yoga retreats for years. From this experience I want to help make packing your bag easier for you. Here are my top 5 items I bring to a yoga retreat:
1. Book light
In many retreats you share a room. If you are like me and like to read before going to sleep, I recommend bringing a small book light. This way I don’t keep my roommate from an early night and can enjoy a few more minutes getting lost in the Bhagavad Gita (or the latest blockbuster).
2. Sun screen
Of course you can buy sun screen at most destinations easily. But you may not be able to get your favorite brand and they are often more expensive than at home. I am allergic against many sun cream brands and learned the hard way to bring my own supply with me.
3. Alarm clock
At many yoga retreats you start your day early and you will need an alarm clock to wake up. You can use your smartphone of course but if you also want to detox from your technology addictions an old-fashioned alarm clock might be preferable. Otherwise it will be so much harder not to go on and check your emails, Instagram or Facebook first thing in the morning.
Even if you are going to the tropics, it can get cold in the mornings and if you are up to meditate at 6am it feels nice to cuddle in a big soft sweater.
5. Nice outfit
Of course you bring your yoga clothes. Lots of them. But probably you will also spend at least one evening at a nice restaurant or have a goodbye meal where you want to dress up a bit.
Pack light, with a smile and joy. Don’t forget your travel documents and passport and everything else will fall into place. Your beautiful retreat destination is waiting for you and you will have a great time, no matter what you forgot to bring with you.
