Sometimes we can find ourselves in a place where life becomes more about work than play. The modern life can easily take over everything else, and we forget to stop and smell the roses. Juggling many different demands in life can make us feel like we don't even have time to remember what we find pleasurable in life, let alone live with a full-on passion.
Enter the Svadhishtana chakra!
The Orange Sacral Chakra of Passion
Located near the tailbone, the Svadhishtana chakra is connected with a feminine energy and relates to our emotional, creative, sensual and sexual energies. Whereas the root chakra relates to the instinct of survival, the sacral chakra is all about the sensory pleasures in life.
The sacral chakra is represented by an orange lotus with six petals. The Sanskrit word Svadhishtana means "one's own space" and it connects us to our inner source of inspiration, giving us the ability to relate and connect to the world around us. It also helps us to create and maintain intimate connections with ease and enjoyment. The color of the sacral chakra is orange, which represents energy, creativity and pleasure.
The Freedom of Feeling
A balanced sacral chakra allows us to fully enjoy the pleasures in life through our senses, which can be related to art, beauty, physical touch or taste. When this chakra is balanced and open, it's easy for us to connect to feelings, as opposed to our thoughts. You feel free to express your feelings and emotions, and also open to intimacy, passion and sexuality.
Since the sacral chakra is related to passion, it's directly linked with creativity and our ability to be flexible by thinking outside the box. Passion is key in creativity, and without passion many great creations would not have come to exists. We need passion towards life and towards the things we do, in order to experience true and free creativity.
Imbalances in the Sacral Chakra
We live in a world that is not always valuing emotions and feelings above rational thought. Passion is often encouraged to be kept under the lid, and through different rules within our society, culture and religion we may get disconnected from our bodies. The challenges we face with the sacral chakra are often related to the feeling of self criticism and guilt. Are we allowed to feel wonderful about our bodies? Are we allowed to feel passion and lose control? To balance the sacral chakra, we need to learn how to loosen this control, and to go with the flow.
Overactive Sacral Chakra
If the sacral chakra is overactive, you may feel strongly emotional, or feel emotions very deeply. You may also have strong mood swings or struggle with addictions. Overactive sacral chakra may cause a fair share of drama and conflict into your life, and sexuality may play a large role. You may also have an unhealthy emotional attachment to the people in your life.
Deficient Sacral Chakra
If on the other hand you have trouble expressing your emotions, or expressing intimacy and sexuality, your sacral chakra may be blocked or weakened. You may be disconnected from your emotions, and have trouble enjoying sensual pleasure, whether it being beauty, nature or an intimate physical experience. You tend to deny things that make you feel good in life, and your sexual drive may be weakened.
On the physical level the blocked sacral chakra can manifest as menstrual disturbances, aches and pains in the lower abdomen or issues with the hips and sacroiliac joint.
Balancing the Sacral Energy
The energy of the sacral chakra encourages us to let every moment be as it is. It encourages to let go of control, and allowing transformation to take place in the body. One way to rekindle the relationship with your body's pleasure centers is to truly feel your body. What does your body enjoy? Do you enjoy feeling the smell of freshly brewed coffee, or the sensation of the wind on your skin. Focus on learning to know your body, and to allow it to be as it is. After all, pleasure is nothing to feel guilty about.
Then, surround yourself with beauty of all kind! Go to art shows or enjoy beautiful music. Be spontaneous and allow yourself to do what you feel like.
Visualizing color is also a powerful way to bring more balance into the body. For deficient sacral chakra you can visualize a warm, healing color orange, and intensify this color around your naval area. Let this healing color release any tension in the hip area. For an overactive sacral chakra, you can also surround yourself with the opposite color, the color blue.

As an affirmation, try starting your day with the following confirmations: I am creative and adaptable. I am a sensual and sexual being. I am able to enjoy the pleasures in life. I allow emotions to flow through me in a balanced way.
