Sugar is the Cure
Sugar is the solution to stop sugar cravings. Yes, yes, you read it right, but I should add a slight clarification: you have to differentiate highly refined sugars from whole sugars.
Refined sugars (table sugar, high fructose syrup, corn syrup …) and all processed foods that contain them cause a dopamine response in our body. Dopamine is a neurotransmitter that activates the rewards and pleasure pathways of our brain and so eventually our body becomes addicted to it. The bad point is that the more sugar you eat, the more amounts your body is going to need to have the same pleasure effect. Plus, refined sugars are only empty calories loaded with chemicals and additives that provide zero nutritional value to your body.
On the other hand, Whole or Natural sugars are full not only of sweet flavor but also of water, vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and fiber. This last one component plays a crucial role as it prevents your body from blood sugar peaks and keeps your stomach satisfied longer.
Here are 4 crazy-easy tips to satisfy your sweet tooth in a healthier and more natural way:
1. Seasonal Fruits
Take advantage of the summer season and enjoy the yumminess of the colorful fruits that nature is bringing us. Berries, cherries, plums, peaches, nectarines, watermelon, melon … Always have plenty of fruit at home so in case you have a craving you’ll have something sweet and healthy to hand.
2. Sweet Root Vegetables
Make sure to include sweet roots in your daily meals to provide your taste buds this sweetness that they desire. Carrots, beets, sweet potatoes and sweet squashes are great!
3. Natural Sweeteners
Swap artificial sweeteners and table sugar with healthier options like raw agave, maple sugar, coconut nectar, or my favorite one, (it has natural enzymes, lots of vitamins and minerals, and is good for allergy prevention) raw honey .
4. Make Savory Foods Sweet
Cook with dried fruits or add them to your salads. You can also add raw honey to your salad dressings. Try mixing 2tbsp Olive Oil + 1tbsp Balsamic vinegar + 2 tsp. raw honey, and drizzle.
