How to Clear Your Mind in 5 Minutes or Less

Summer is turning to Fall. The air is crisp and the hillsides are ablaze with trees the color of fire. Sometimes I feel a bit envious of Mother Nature. The natural world knows how to “go with the flow” when the seasons change, but I don’t. Without fail, four times a year (during every seasonal transition) I have a hard time focusing and making decisions while my mind races with a flurry of half-baked ideas and “noise.”

Have you ever felt this way? If so, you know how frustrating, defeating, and exhausting it can be to struggle against it. Luckily, there is a simple solution: get outside and walk.

The simple act of walking grounds you — literally ROOTS you — to the earth.

Walking allows you to absorb the earth’s energy, soaking up her sheer power and ancient strength. This is especially true when wearing minimalist footwear or even going barefoot. Feeling every pebble beneath your feet gets you out of your head and into your body, allowing you to focus on the present moment.

The rhythmic motion of walking is almost like rocking — it takes you back to your infancy, when life was fresh and new and uncomplicated.  I am convinced that this is the reason my mind clears and life looks simpler and brighter whenever I go for a walk.

Do as I do: Move your body to clear your mind.

You may be on a deadline, but remember: Walking is not a waste of time. Rather, it can be a sanity saver, a flint that sparks creativity, or a study break that will leave your mind open and ready for more.

For bonus points, walk in the woods. The forest air is magical: fresh, clean, and it smells so good!
