4 Reasons to Invest in a Quality Yoga Mat

We have all heard it before: “I don't want to spend that kind of money on a yoga mat.” And we have all seen it before, someone futilely fumbling to place towels underneath their hands and feet to help stop their slipping and sliding all over their mat. As you watch them and feel kind of bad that the mat is affecting their practice, you can’t help but also think, “Why don’t they just buy a good mat?” So if this is you or someone you know, here are 4 perfect reasons to invest in a better quality yoga mat: [wp_ad_camp_1]

1) You practice 3+ times a week.

If you are practicing multiple times a week, thus choosing yoga as a staple in your weekly activities, then it is worth the investment to treat yourself. You don’t want a mat that’s falling apart and making you slip. You want a yoga mat that will show up for you, just as you show up to your mat every week!

2) You do hot or heated yoga.

This one's a no brainer. If you do hot or heated yoga, you need a quality mat in your life to prevent yourself from sliding and distracting yourself and possibly unnecessarily hurting yourself. The compounds used in lower priced mats causes your sweat to lay on the surface, causing slipping.

3) You care about the environment.

I’m sure many people have heard about Subway using a chemical used in yoga mats in their bread, and how everyone freaked out about it. Yet we’ll practice yoga with this chemical in our mats? Many low cost rubber or plastic mats have toxic chemicals in them like PVC, which are not only harmful to the environment, but also to you. And it can’t help but seem ironic that a yogi, someone who supposedly accepts one’s connection to all things in the universe, would buy a low cost, quick production mat that is detrimental to the earth.

4) You honor your practice.

Your mat should be a sacred space. You should feel amazing on your mat. Like a warrior. Like a goddess. It should be your own little space to let go and delve within. But what if your mat is falling apart? What if you slide because of your sweat? What if because of that you undoubtedly cannot concentrate, thus defeating the purpose of coming to your mat? And what if you only bought the big box store mat because it was cheap, but you have a connection with another mat and stare at it every time you look online or go into the store? Is that honoring your practice? I think we can agree it’s not.

Now for those of you on a budget, social media is a fantastic platform to find discounts, and not enough people take advantage of it. On Instagram, for example, keep an eye out for your favorite yoga companies to offer discount codes for ambassadors, flash sales, or holidays, which may vary from free shipping to 20% off! On top of that, you can win awesome yoga gear, including yoga mats, via Instagram! I have used social media countless times for deals and steals, seriously!

In the end, I’m not saying that you have to spend hundreds of dollars on yoga mats, but I do believe from experience and in talking to others, that a good quality yoga mat makes a huge difference. So if you are financially able to treat yourself and buy a nice mat, then I say, do it!!
